White gulls fly over my blue lake, like white angels over the blue sky. Neither would the gulls be white nor the lake blue, had the great sun not opened its eye above them.
O my Heavenly Mother, open Your eye in my soul, that I may see what is what. That I may see who dwells in my soul, and what fruits grow within it.
Without Your eye I wander hopelessly through my soul, like a traveler through midnight, through midnight's indistinction. And the midnight traveler falls, and rises, and what he meets on the way he calls events.
You are the only event of my life, O luminary of my soul. When a child rushes into its mother's arms, for it there are no events. When a bride runs to meet her bridegroom, she does not see the flowers in the meadow, nor hear the roaring of the storm, nor sense the scent of the cypresses or the will of the beasts—she sees only the face of her bridegroom; hears only the music from his lips; smells only his soul. When love goes forth to meet love, nothing happens to it. Time and space step out of love's way.
Aimless travelers and the Loveless have events, and have history. Love has no history, nor history love.
When someone tumbles down a mountain or crawls up a mountain without knowing where he is going, events impose themselves upon him as the goal of his journey. Truly, events are the goal of the aimless, and history of the pathless.
Therefore the aimless and the pathless halt at events, and quarrel with events. But I hasten silently to You, both up the mountain and down the mountain, and the scorned events angrily draw back before my feet.
If I were a stone tumbling down the mountain, I would not think about the stones I strike against, but about the abyss at the foot of the steep.
If I were a mountain stream, I would not think about my rugged path, but about the lake that awaits me.
Terrible in truth is the abyss of those who are in love with events, which drag them downward.
Heavenly Mother, my only Love, free me from slavery to events, and make me Your slave.
O Whitest Day, dawn in my soul, that I may see the goal of my tangled path.
O Sun above suns, the only event in the universe that draws my heart, illumine my inward parts, that I may see who has dared to dwell in them besides Thee. That I may uproot from them all the fruits that are sweet on the outside, while their heart smells of rottenness.
